General Information about Moles (Talpa Europaea)

Moles have short usually black velvety fur, with spade-like forelimbs with large claws that face towards the rear of the animal. Pink fleshy snout and tiny eyes.

Size: 113-159mm. Tail: 25-40mm.

Weight: 72-128g. Males usually larger.

Lifespan: Most moles don’t live beyond 3 years but can live up to 6 years. Their main predators are tawny owls and buzzards, stoats, cats and dogs, along with some vehicular casualties. Moles are found throughout Britain but not in Ireland. They are present in most habitats where the soil is deep enough to allow tunneling.

The main breeding season runs from February to June, and a female will have three or four young in a nest built underground.

Diet: Earthworms are the most important component of the mole's diet; an 80g mole needs 50g of earthworms per day

What Damage can a mole do?

Moles are considered to be agricultural pests and some problems caused by moles can include contamination of silage with soil particles making it unpalatable to livestock, the covering of pasture with fresh soil reducing its size and yield.

Do moles carry Listeria?

As well as the danger that soil from mole heaps can contain listeria bacteria, there is a risk that when a silage or combine harvester picks up bits of soil it can lead to poor fermentation of the crop around it.

Listeriosis is a bacterial disease which infects sheep, cattle and many other animals.

The Listeriosis bacteria is present in soil which the mole brings to the surface as mole hills.

If mole hills are present at the time of silage making, any soil from the mole hills is picked up and mixed with the grass. If conditions are right, the bacteria can multiply within the silage over time and cause problems.

Animals can also damage their feet/legs in mole holes. Whilst walking over the top of a tunnel, they can collapse causing injury to the animal whether its livestock or pets.

When moles are burrowing they can disfigure lawns and parks, destroy flower beds and the roots of grasses, and creates havoc in small gardens.

The short answer is yes, as long as we are able to book you a visit.

Humane means that the animal (mole) will not suffer. A lot of people think Humane means that we live catch the mole. unfortunately this isn't the case. The traps we use have been proven to be one of the most humane ways to remove moles.
